A Dialogue between Light and Imagination

A Dialogue between Light and Imagination

About

About

As a stage lighting designer, I’ve experienced how light transforms emotion, space, and narrative on many level. However its creative potential is often overlooked, and many people struggle to articulate their thoughts about lighting. My goal is to make it easier to communicate ideas about light and to simplify the process of exploring lighting concepts.

GenLight is a tool designed to address these goals by turning lighting creation into an intuitive, real-time dialogue between humans and machines. It’s a generative lighting software that helps users develop stage lighting ideas, offering an accessible way to spark creative inspiration and generate customized visual references that support clearer, more effective communication with lighting designers.

This project integrates real-time rendering technology with generative AI to create an interactive platform for lighting exploration. Its central aim is to lower the domain barrier that often prevents non-experts from engaging meaningfully with lighting design. Traditionally, understanding and communicating lighting ideas has required specialized technical knowledge and tools, making it difficult for performers, directors, or students to participate in the creative process.

By combining generative AI prompts with visual feedback in a real-time 3D environment, the platform offers an exploratory space where users can experiment with light without needing to understand DMX protocols, console programming, or technical terms. This hands-on experience encourages learning through doing and fosters a deeper sensitivity to how lighting affects space, mood, and storytelling.

The project also serves as a communication bridge between professional lighting designers and collaborators from other disciplines. It translates abstract lighting intentions into visual previews and editable scenes, making collaboration more fluid and inclusive. In doing so, it supports a more democratic and participatory approach to lighting design, empowering a broader range of users to engage with light not just as a tool, but as a creative medium.
